Attraction Marketing VS. Traditional Sales and Marketing
As you listen to Pete’s story, it just may remind you of some past experiences of your own.
Prospect Pete gets up on Saturday morning to go shopping for a car. He’s milked his old one for as many miles as he dares.
Besides, it’ll be nice to drive a new car again. “I just love that feeling of diving off the lot in a brand new car – and the smell? Heavenly – nothing like it in the world…”.
Pete steps onto the car lot and the white shirted/black tie’d people begin to circle like vultures, until the lucky salesman who’s next in line walks up with a friendly smile.
“Hi, How’re ya doin’”? Says Salesman Sam, as he walks – almost runs up…
“I see you were looking at this beauty. Did you notice that amazing factory paint job? And look at the tires, these are the best money can buy! This particular model has been really hard to get. The guys love ‘em and the girls love the guys that have em’ – if you know what I mean” says Sam while nudging Pete with his elbow and winking…
“These babies have been selling like hotcakes. We usually don’t even have them in stock – the a deal fell through on this beauty just last night. I guess it’s your lucky day, isn’t it…I’ll go get the keys and we’ll take her for a spin.”.
“Wait a second” says Pete. “I’m just looking right now.”.
“I know you are”, says Sam – “it’s much easier to look from the inside, so you can really get a feel for her.”
Pete reluctantly agrees to the test drive…
They get back onto the lot. Now Pete’s really squirming because he wants to get out of there – but he can’t, Sam’s too “good”.
“Come on into the office Pete, and we’ll talk some numbers…If I can get you the price you told me earlier, would you drive it home today?”
How many of us have been through this unpleasant scenario or one like it?
Doesn’t it make you want to go back again for more?
Yet, how many internet marketers try to promote their business this way?
Here’s how it often goes…
An unsuspecting person (like you or me) types in anything related to internet marketing, home business etc… and the search engine produces countless websites.
The only problem is that as soon as you click on the site, you get slammed with flashy sports cars, girls in bikinis, big wads of money, and huge red letters that say “Join my program now, and strike it rich. I made $137,250.50 last month – so can you…”
You’re thinking – “hold on, I just wanted to research internet marketing and see if there are any online business I could do from home – Back Off!”.
The Trouble With Selling
The more you try to sell someone, the more they resist it.
The more you push someone with hard sell techniques, the more they push back. These tactics used to work years ago when people weren’t so savvy.
Not any more – Attraction Marketing is the wave of the future.
Why?
People have so many choices, and have access to so much information over the internet these days, that “old school” sales techniques of pushing features and benefits just don’t work anymore.
People are much more empowered and not as easily manipulated as in years gone by.
Most people don’t like selling or being sold to, but they do like doing business with people they like respect, and trust – that is the core of attraction marketing.
The good salesperson knows that the harder they sell the less sales they make…Nobody (or very few) like old fashioned prospecting, cold calling, objection handling and slick sales pitches.
The slicker you are, the quicker you’ll fall on your face in this new economy.
Even knowing that people hate to be sold, one thing is still as true as ever.
People love to buy.
Attraction Marketing and the new economy…
In fact, even in this economy, people are buying all sorts of things, because they want them. And they feel good knowing that they can buy them – so they do…
And most of the time, it really isn’t about the price, it’s about the experience.
Take Nordstrom for example. They certainly aren’t known for their low prices…
But when you walk in, you instantly get the feeling of luxury and opulence. There’s a guy playing the piano beautifully , and people lounging around enjoying the scenery. Relaxing…
People feel good there, and they certainly don’t feel pressured to buy anything. The sales associates are there to serve you, not sell you. Whether they know it or not they’re great and using the concepts of attraction marketing.
They’re there to wait upon your every need and make you feel comfortable and welcome.
When it’s fun to buy, people want to buy. When it’s their idea, it’s a good idea. When you provide fantastic service and people begin to know, like and trust you – they’ll want to buy something from you. It’s just human nature…
Think Like a Leader.
In our article Internet Marketing, we touched upon being entirely focused upon your customer and their individual wants, needs, fears, goals and anything else you can find out about them.
One focus of Attraction Marketing is that by really knowing your customers and their needs, you can better serve them. The true leader, as Jesus so aptly said, is a servant first.
The true leader leads his/her people by serving them and meeting their needs. We grow as leaders by first serving and developing those people that we’re leading.
It has to be completely about them, not about us.
When we’re all about other people and helping other people, an amazing thing happens – we begin to receive even more than we’re giving out. This attitude of giving first – brings abundance into our own lives by the law of sowing and reaping.
When we view our environment, or the universe, or whatever you want to call it – as having an infinite supply – you start thinking in terms of abundance.
When you have a mindset of abundance, instead of lack, then you naturally give to others. If there really is no lack, then your needs will always be met as well.

Attraction Marketing – The First Generation
Mike Dillard is credited as the first person to really bring the philosophy of Attraction Marketing and leadership to the realm of internet marketing.
He took the tried and true principles of direct response mail marketing – beginning really at the turn of the 20th Century – and applied them to the internet, and internet marketing. Like King Solomon said, “There’s nothing new under the sun.”.
Mike did what brilliant innovators have always done in the past…Take what has worked in the past and apply it to something entirely new.
In his book Magnetic Sponsoring, Mike tells his story about how he went from waiting tables to earning a 7 figure income marketing on the internet.
He tells his story of calling 100-200 leads per day, talking to people who really weren’t interested in his business and didn’t have any kind of entrepreneurial spirit or desire in the first place.
That’s what happens when you buy “opportunity leads” from some lead company who’s already sold them 1000 times before you ever saw them.
Even when you’re dealing with a lead company who’s honest, you’re still talking to a “cold” prospect who doesn’t know who you are or why they should be talking to you.
Most of the time, they’ve answered some ad asking them if they would like to “work from home” if given the right opportunity – or something like that.
